  • You can buy it through Selftrade. The tax issue seems very hazy; the prospectus implies that HMRC aren't telling how they intend to treat any gains.

Cheerfulcat, is this just for the ETF or any US stock? I'm asking because I have bought stock via selftrade. Two are not in an ISA wrapper and one is. I signed the W-Ben8 form but I can't remember what the tax treatment is for the stocks.

    Hi, hobbesandco,

    It's for the ETF.

That link is to the lyxor GBS (gold) etf traded in london. We were talking about the Lyxor Commodities CRB ETF traded in paris. (CRB.PA)And I don't think selftrade will do it. (it doesn't have a tick or a phone).
Sorry about the confusion, I had been discussing GBS elsewhere.
FWIW PGBS ( gold ) and TCRB ( commodities ) can both be dealt through Selftrade. So can any other ETF which can be settled through Crest.

Are you sure? CRB.PA (sorry, reuters boy!) doesn't settle in crest, it's only on Euroclear - and I don't think there is a CDI linked to the ETF as it's so new. It's definitely not on the International Retail Service...

I asked Selftrade because I am interested in both ETFs and that's what they told me. I will let you know the outcome when I attempt to buy...

Take Gold: Inexperienced investors are now attracted by recent sparkling returns, when in actual fact they should have bought in when Gold was an unpopular beast (2003). Now is not the time to buy.

Conrad, it will be interesting to see what happens as I beleive Gold is 'aving a breather at the mo, and I am actively pursueing Gold / PM investment options. Am actually hoping it drops a bit more, although I can't see it dropping much further in the near future.

Re Dilied queries, have also looked at the US iShares ETF's and Central Fund of Canada - holds virtually a 50 / 50 split between Gold and Silver bullion - (although as previously commented on it tends to trade at a bit of a premium (8%ish).

I've also had it confirmed by Selftrade that the CFoC can be held in a CTF and therefore an ISA. But considering they screwed up on the information they gave me on GBS if any advisers want to confirm or refute the Selftrade advice (opinion) I would be more than happy.
