Do I need to buy liners?

I'm off to wilko's today to buy some basic hanging baskets ready for my strawberry plants.

My question is do I need to buy the liners too - has anyone got any moneysaving/reusing/recycling ideas which I could use as a liner? Believe me.. the mood i'm in I'd be welding coat hangers together for the baskets if I could!

Actually I have black bin liners... would they work?

Yes black bin liners will work. Also last year I cut us some old fleece jumpers and used them. Had the advantage of the basket not drying out quite so quickly and I had a great lot of strawberrys.

I used black plastic last year, and then added a few layers of newspaper too to absorb some of the water.

cardboard works fine and is bio-degradable, i just empty the basket into the composter at the end of the season

The other thing, if you want it to look slightly nicer than black binbags is if you can find a local nursery that sells the liner on a roll by the metre. Heck of a sight cheaper, and if you line it with black bin bags it lasts for several seasons.

Edit - just noticed the blue tits demolishing mine for their nests - I take back the last bit about lasting a few seasons!

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.
