Who Are RMA?

Hi all
I've got a garbled message on my voicemail at work from a company called RMA asking me to call them by 8pm tonight. As I have recently had my CCCS interview and am currently preparing all the paperwork, I suspected it might be something finance related. However, I have informed all the credit companies, so there's no particular reason for calls until they've received the stuff from CCCS.
I phoned RMA back to ask who they are and they would only say that they are 'related to finance companies' - they wouldn't give me any more information. They then asked me for my name and postcode. I said "er, no, I don't even know who you are so I'm not going to give you my personal details over the phone". He then got a bit sh*tty saying that they need to talk to me and they couldn't do that without my details. I suggested that they write to me. He said that they had already done that, but I had not responded. I pointed out that as I've never heard of them, they obviously haven't written to me. (And I'm not really sure how he was so certain that they'd written, when I didn't even give him my name  )
Anyone know who they are and who they represent? Their phone no is 08717 506699 (not a cheap number either  )
Cheers!

Thanks for that. I'm a bit puzzled though.
All of my credit companies know that I was having an interview with CCCS. All of them were fine about it and said to get the paperwork to them asap. Up until July, all of my payments were up to date and I had a good payment history. Bearing this in mind, why has one of my credit cards sent my debt to a debt collection agency - that's jumping the gun a bit isn't it when I've only missed one payment?!

hmm maybe one of your creditors just passed it on, my advice call them back and tell them as they'll hound you otherwise. (i have heard bad reports on them in the past re their bullying tactics) but just say "I am dealing with CCCS can you bear with me for XX days please" they then should place the account on a hold, if the agent doesnt, request to speak to a manager and get them to hold it for you.0 -
Start as you mean to go on - don't tolerate phone calls to your workplace - read other postings about multiple harrassment from Risk Management Alternatives and other collection agencies. If you do get to speak to them don't give any security details but ask for the operatives name (probably false) and post it here if you can please.
Thanks and good luck0 -
Read the resurrected thread by Davek1 to see just what you, and we, have to deal with.
If you cannot afford it it is unfair to ask you to phone them on a high rate number (OFT). Perhaps you an find an alternative number at https://www.saynoto0870.com
Good luckI am NOT, nor do I profess to be, a Qualified Debt Adviser. I have made MANY mistakes and have OFTEN been the unwitting victim of the the shamefull tactics of the Financial Industry.
If any of my experiences, or the knowledge that I have gained from those experiences, can help anyone who finds themselves in similar circumstances, then my experiences have not been in vain.

OFT Debt Collection Guidance 2.8d - unfair to contact client directly and bypass clients' appointed representatives. If they want to phone anyone they should phone CCCS.

Thanks for all your replies
I have now read the other thread on RMA which I hadn't noticed before - it sounds like I have fun to come!
Well, I called RMA back and spoke to someone who, to put it bluntly, didn't seem very bright. She told me that it was regarding my Abbey National/MBNA credit card. She also added that (a) the debt was now 'theirs' (b) that RMA are NOT a debt collection agency (c) that RMA were merely a 'department' of MBNA, and it's just "another office in another town". I asked for clarification of this and I asked specifically if RMA were wholly owned by MBNA, and she replied "yes".
I then phoned Abbey who seemed to have no record of my previous conversation, and told me that they don't always put notes on a customer's file  I told her that I had just received the paperwork from CCCS and they would have it very soon. She was ok at first, agreeing that I have been a good customer who has never skipped a payment or gone over limits. She then tried to press me to do a list of outgoings/income/assets so that their debt management department could come to an arrangement with me. I asked why this was necessary - CCCS are handling it and they will make the arrangement. She said that CCCS would "take ages" and my debt would "move on" and it would "save me time". I said that I didn't see the point of doing it twice and trying to arrange this with them when CCCS would be doing it - surely that would be confusing
I think she was trying to get me to agree to a figure that Abbey want. I pointed out that it's not really up to me to agree a figure, that's for CCCS to sort out, bearing in mind I have other creditors and thus it will need to be an appropriate pro-rata figure. I asked to speak to their debt management department but was told that I couldn't do so without going through all my income/expenditure/assets. I was a bit wary of this re assets, after CCCS told me that the creditors have no right to know eg how much equity there is in my home. I asked again to be put through, and was put on hold for ages, only to be told then that they were "too busy". I will be making a token payment this month, but she kept telling me that they would only help stop further charges if I made my full overdue payment "today, and today only". I gave up and asked her to make notes on my file and that I would send a token payment next week.
She did tell me that the debt was still with them and had not been sold to RMA, only the missing payment was being pursued by RMA. She also told me that I could make payments to Abbey directly, not involving RMA. Finally, I clarified with her that RMA are indeed a debt collection agency, and are not in any way a 'department' of MBNA/Abbey.
I then phoned RMA and asked to speak to a manager. I told him about the RMA staff member who had made claims about RMA being owned by MBNA and he agreed that that was untrue and would "have a word." Fortunately he was a reasonable man and he has put a stop on any further calls over the next week, by which time I will have made a token payment to Abbey.
Phew! Hopefully that's ok for now. I've asked them not to call me at work and fortunately I have a good receptionist at work who is used to screening 'junk' phone calls for me.
I'm sure that's not the end of it though and I'll be back soon with more questions!
Thanks for all your help and reassurance with my problems - it's really appreciated :beer:0 -
