I told my dad last night...

What exactly my financial situation is and he offered to pay it all off for me!
Whilst I am greatful for such a great dad (whom in his time was worse with his finances than me!) then I said no thanks
This mess is all mine and it's important to me to fix this myself
I told him how much I have already paid off since March this year and that with a little luck I might be debt free by the end of the year... (ok a LOT of luck!) but it's nice to know that if I need it then he will help me out
I know my nan would pay it all off in a heartbeat too if I told her about it but it's important to me to sort this out myself
My mum can't afford to help me, she still helps my younger brother and will continue to do so so long as he is studying and he is actually very tight with his money and now he's moved away from home he refuses to buy brand names etc and I'm just SO proud!
I have to admit it's tempting to have my debt all paid off... but what would it acchieve? I'd feel guilty for putting any of my mistakes on to my family as a burden. Especially because right now I can manage it all and overpay every month on the loan and my cards and various accounts are all in the black (even started a £50 emergency fund for unscheduled uhmmm emergencies
and yes it makes no sense as I should use it towards debt but it enables me to have an emergency fund because it really throws me off balance if something happens and my carefully calculated budget gets whacked o my debt amount has to increase... I'd rather loose a litte interest and gain a lot of peace of mind
).
Anyway dunno why but I just thought I'd share with everyone...

Did you feel a bit better for telling him?
And there is nothing wrong with an emergency fund for those times when we all can't add up & mess up a month's cashflow!

Good for you. My mum paid off occasional debts for me when I was younger - nothing massive, eg £850 student overdraft and similar. I hasten to add that I always paid her back - but it was over a long period of time and with no interest. I sometimes think that if I'd learnt a bit harder and been whacked with interest I wouldn't be in the mess I am now. I've never really struggled to pay money back before because my mum helped me out, and to be honest, I think the struggle is going to do me the world of good - much as I hate it!0

i totally agree with you it's nice to have the offer and if something totally drastic happens to have the back up there if you need it ..but youwill feel moreof a sense of acomplishment if you do it yourself ..not only that but it will make youthink twice before sepnding again ...emergency funds are a great idea if you can have one ..they give youpeace of mind ..if say youdon't get the right wage one month or if your car breaks down ..wish i had one for this month i'm s.s.p and i'm struggling ...when i have my debts more under control i think i will start an emergecy fund ...thanks for sharing0

I guess I felt a bit better for telling him... I feel guilty over the fact he now wants to help and is feeling bad because I won't let him pay my debts for meI suppose it's fair to explain that I have in the past helped him out financially and he wants to return the favour as well as be a good dad
I do think if it all got paid off (not by my dad but say lottery win) I'd probably have learnt my lesson... The feeling of control and knowing what I have and where it goes has become addictive now! I can't even go away for a romantic weekend (treat by boyfriend) without ensuring that he gets a good deal (40% off in case you wondered) and when we go on holiday later this year it will be a darned good deal
Whilst at the moment I like seeing the numbers get smaller and smaller I know I will LOVE seeing the black ones get bigger and bigger once I am debt freeDFW Nerd #025DFW no more! Officially debt free 2017 - now joining the MFW's!

Good on you! At least when you pay it off you'll be less likely to get in this situation again and credit where credits due, a lot of people would have jumped at the chance to have it paid off. Good luck in paying it back.January budget
