roof surveys - who does them?

we're buying a house and we've decided to have a roof survey done.
i'm not quite sure who does these specialist surveys - would it be building surveyors? i've googled and it would appear that building companies that build/fix roofs do roof surveys but i'm not sure whether it's to assess the roof or whether to assess what work they need doing.
i know - it's easy to find out just by calling building surveyors/roof companies... but i cannot do that until tuesday and i know there's plenty of knowledgable people on here!
thanks

Roofing companies will do it free but remember they have a vested interest in getting work.
A building surveyor will assess the roof (and rest of the property) for a fee on an impartial basis.0 -
Our building survey flagged up other specialist surveys that were needed for mortgage. We contacted EA who had their own company who did quotes for FREE. good enough for us and cost nowt.0

thanks a lot for this. yes, that's exactly what i thought - building companies do the surveys in order to get work.
rlfan82 - i don't think the ea who's selling the house offer such a service but you mention your bank requested additional surveys in order to give you mortgage. the valuation survey is included with the mortgage we're getting - i'm wondering, if the roof is in major trouble (i.e. rotten joists/beams) will they flag this up and request a roof survey to be done?0
