Unknown Administrator password

My daughter has been given an old laptop which seems to work well, but we don't know the administrator password - I would appreciate if someone could tell me if the password can be reset.

Does the account your daughter have access got admin rights on it. If so you cant just reset the admin password you would need to format or A bootable disk that acts like a windows installer to start then you get options toreset account passwords ;).

No - that's the problem. She doesn't have any admin rights with the only account she can use. This is why she was given the PC as without the admin p/w, it has limited use. Can I create a bootable disk from my pc and use that to boot her pc? If yes, how do I create a bootable disk? Both our pc's are running vista

Follow the link that Browntoa provided.

In particular the password reset tool that's provided by Petter Nordahl-Hagen works well, and his website tells you how to do it step by step.

Assuming there is no information on the laptop of use to you, it might be easiest just to format it and reinstall Windows (or another OS of your choice :))

Yes, that did occur to me as we don't need anything on the laptop, but how do I format the hard drive?

if it's the windows admin password, then it won't help as it's got nothing to do with the bios. Browntoas link should do the job.
