Sound Insulation- 1985 Mid-terraced House?

Funny how it seems to vary, I guess there are always differences in the build.
I lived in a middle flat in a Victorian tenement. Sound proofing was great. Only noise you could hear was from the close - echoey voices etc. Couldn't really hear the neighbours at all - either through the wall or above or below! It was a big bulky sandstone building.
Now we live in a 40s (council style) quarter villa and the sound proofing is much worse. Not quite as bad as what others are saying below though, but I have heard my downstairs neighbour shake the quilt in the morning. Has to be very silent in our house to hear stuff like that. She has laminate flooring and I can hear noise from that if she has her shoes on. Most of the time she must have slippers on so we can't hear it then. We have laminate in our dining room, so I make a point of not going in there wearing shoes if I can help it, as I'm sure it would be noisy for her.
For a while we also had a problem with water hammer - between all 4 of us. I swear there must have been a loose pipe somewhere as it has now miraculously been fixed despite no-one admitting to getting it fixed but one neighbour having some plumbing and tiling work done. It was really annoying...bang bang bang every time someone turned a tap off, or when washing machines stop filling.
We're moving to a detatched house in July :j0 -
My mum lives in a 1900's terraced and when i was growing up, i could never hear the neighbours (unless their son was playing the drums!). Now (the neighbuors are knocking on abit) you can hear their TV and telephone thru the walls!
Some friends of mine live in an early 1980's semi and you can hear their neighbour's tele.
And i live in a 2006 flat and i cant hear anything from my neighbours, unless their in the entrance hall. These flats were noted for insulation and sound proofing when they were built.
Moving somewhere with noisy neighbours is a serious concern tho.Mortgage - £37k
