Paying Electricity Two companies?

Options
We have moved house a year ago and received a letter saying we need to pay money to British Gas. We've looked more closely at our old bills (didn't pay too much attention before), and we have what seems to be 2 accounts with BritishGas, one says it's Gas and one Electricity and Gas. But we paid our Electricity to E-on? Also, these two "accounts" with British gas had different customer reference numbers? Anyone else have any idea what's going on here! Thanks

If you have a BG account with both gas & elec on ONE bill/one piece of paper, this means it was an "occupier" account ("To the Occupier or Occupiers") that either still says "To The Occupier..." or has been changed into your name, probably by their in-house collections team. They may have a done an electoral role search or something similar. I'd suggest contacting BG with all of your reference numbers, it could be something that can be sorted out quickly.

    Hi SamanthaJane

I would check the bills we have sent and make sure the Meter Serial Number we are charging against matches that on the actual meter. It will be on a plaque on the front of the meter.

Call us if there is a discrepancy as we may be charging for someone else's electricity.

Can I just ask if we have been billing since you moved in and are still billing you now?

Another possibility is an account for the previous people has not been closed down properly.

Also, is this a new build? If it is, the builders will have been responsible for usage before you moved in and this account may not have been closed properly. This is not uncommon with new builds.

Just a few thoughts but hope they are useful. Give me a shout if I can help further as will be happy to do so. :)
