Carpet help needed

I'm looking into bedroom carpet and i'm finding the whole thing so confusing. We originally thought that we wanted a wool mix carpet but the salesman in my local carpet shop advised against it as he said it is a waste of money having wool carpet in the bedroom. We have a budget of up to £300 including fitting and underlay but i would rather spend less if i can as that is right at the top end of our budget.
The salesman recommended we go for a cheaper synthetic carpet at £7.49 per sqm which includes the cost of fitting. This seemed a little too cheap to me and i found one i liked in the shop at £9.99 per sqm which also includes fitting. I am planning to buy underlay online so that means the whole thing is going to cost me in the region of £220. Do you think that i should be spending more if i can afford it or is what he said correct? He said he would spend no more than £200 himself on a bedroom carpet as it is going to get very little wear and most of it is going to be covered with furniture. I've always been told to spend the most you can afford on carpet as it is worth it in the long run but maybe this is not the case with bedroom carpet. Basically i am worried that if i get the £9.99 one is going to look awful after a year and if that's the case i'd rather spend a bit more now. Any advice would be appreciated as i am at a loss as to what to do now.

Wool mix carpets are normally for heavy or semi heavy wear areas.
A bedroom is a low wear area and the carpet salesman is right. A wool mix is overkill for a bedroom and the cheaper one is better suited. You'll get years of wear out of it, so save yourself a few quid.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0 -
having just re-carpeted my own bedrooms i can say hes probably right. have you considered a carpet that doesnt need underlay? thats what we got fitted. it has some kind of backing already on the carpet and is much less hassle and can work out cheaper too.0

I think that i will go for the £9.99 one then, i was just so surprised that he was recommending that i spend less! We'll need to get underlay as the one i like is hessian backed and i don't really want to go without it. Do you think £220 is a good price to pay or could i get away with paying less? That figure includes cloud 9 underlay and fitting and it is 17sqm in total.0

I laid cheaper carpet in my bedrooms when I moved in 6 years ago - can`t remember the cost per yard but paid around £600 for 3 double bedrooms, landing and stairs with fitting and underlay. I replaced the landing and stairs when I carpeted the lounge but the bedroom carpets are still in pretty good condition but tbh I wish I had spent a bit more and had a better quality carpet that would have stayed excellent for many years as I do not relish the thought of trying to get any of the bedrooms carpeted now that I live here and have beds/wardrobes etc which would all get in the way of carpet fitters.
Depends on how much carpet is showing after furnishing the room I suppose and also how long you plan to live there.0 -
