Thanks. I am currently downloading Ubuntu followed by an ISO burner. I hope to be able to save all important data. I have a Knoppix disk (variant) which does not let me write to USB drives.
All good experience!0 -

Knoppix in live CD mode will let you write to drives including USB sticks, it is a nominal security precaution. I think that to make a drive writable you just right click on the drive and something like make it writable or right click and properties or similar.
Good luck0 -
I tried to alter the read-write permissions with no success. I have since managed to copy most of the files using the Ubuntu Live CD. Will get more data off tomorrow. Thanks to everyone for their help and suggestions.0

I had issues with this. Complete and utter tosh. What a pile of... Ubuntu is far more intuitive.Knoppix in live CD mode will let you write to drives including USB sticks, it is a nominal security precaution. Collected all data including Outlook .pst files. All data either on memory stick or on the other PC.
I put a Windows XP Pro disk into the computer and booted into Recovery Console where I ran chkdsk. It took around 90 mins and found and repaired at least 1 error.
I then booted into Safe Mode but it sort of hung after Mup.sys ... a little bit of patience, the hard disk whirred into action and Safe Mode loaded.
It is currently running the Malwarebytes scan. Once this is done I will boot up using a Restore Point and all may be well.
I will give an update later.
Thanks again to all.0 -
well thats excellent news glad you managed to get things backed up just in case and good luck fixing windowsDrop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)0 -
I use Ubuntu, and only Ubuntu, all the time, and have not used Windows for many years.Deleted_User wrote: »I had issues with this. Complete and utter tosh. What a pile of... Ubuntu is far more intuitive.
However, Knoppix is an excellent Live CD (DVD option with more resources) and is intended more as a toolkit of resources rather than a friendly easy to use, installed, desktop system that Ubuntu is.
The author of Knoppix is married to a blind woman and he also includes facilities in knoppix for unsighted use (Adriane), depending on the version downloaded, the default can be unsighted use (Adriane) or normal (Knoppix).0 -
All done now. I have taken off loads of Programs that are not used any more such as Harry Potter and Roller Coaster Tycoon.
I also have a full backup of all documents, pictures etc so teh PC is working beautifully.
Thanks for all your help and advice.
I wonder what caused the problem in the first place (no answers required!).0 -

I am able to access the BIOS screen. I reset to the default settings. The only options I have before that are F2 - Setup; F8 - Boot Order; F12 - Network Boot.
I can't load in Safe Mode, nor in any of the other options. It always gets so far then powers off then on again in infinite loop. Power stays on while in BIOS settings.
Thanks for your help.
possibly a mobo fault try wipin the cmos could be some bizzare setting in place0 -
