use by date for cartridges?

Just been having a clearout and found a totally sealed and unused lexmark black 16 cartridge. Must have had a senior moment and forgotten it was there as I've bought another one since. Is there a use by time on these or as it's still sealed and in the box should it still be useable?

  • I only noticed the other day on the packaging of my spares that they had a expiry date on them. Mine were Epson ones though so not sure if they all do!

Ink cartridges usually do have a use by date.

I had some old HP cartridges where you couldn't see the date unless you opened the box (date printed on the shrink wrapped cellophane wrapper)

When they are out of date they tend to dry up so when you take them out give them a shake and listen for a sploshing sound

Unfortunately I have found that suppliers of cheap inkjet cartridges have supplied those with an expired use-buy date. So beware.

When I complained, they suggested that it's possible to get the cartridges to work by immersing them in boiling water for a while. And I have found that this may work, sometimes.

But obviously, the answer is not to buy in future from such suppliers.
