Can a rose be transplanted now?
My sister has one rose bush growing in the middle of an otherwise flagstoned front garden. She wants to take it out as it is a magnet for rubbish blowing in from the street. She wants to keep it for sentimental reasons and transplant into a big pot.
What time of year can she do this? And does she need to do anything special to it?

Should be just about OK to do now, but don't wait until it is in full growth ....dig it out as carefully as you can - put it in a pot with a good loam based compost (John Innes or similar....NOT an ordinary multi-purpose) and then prune back quite hard to some strong buds so that there is not too much top growth to support whilst it gets established. Water well and see how it goes, I would expect just a few flowers this year whilst it settles down.
As it is in a pot, It will need regular feeding during the season to give the best flowering......Good luck.0 -

There shouldn't be a problem moving the rose as winter was long most rose growers are still sending bare root untill the middle of april ..
As said before prune it back and plant in the pot with good compost and feed throughout the season .. and next year it will really pick up and flower better
I have moved several roses this year where i have lost some to winter .. i have around 160 roses in my garden .. :rotfl:0 -
Ok You win. I have a grand total of 2!!!!! I think it's because my Mum was very greenfingered but couldn't get on with roses at all, so it has sort of put me off. I prefer to put my effort and space into my veg now with some cheap bedding plants for bees and colour.Father Ted: Now concentrate this time, Dougal. These

Pots are not really ideal for roses but that isn't to say it can't be done. But do make sure the pot never dries out; that barbecue summer may occur this year.0
