What type of ivy should i get ??

I have been building a rustic fence in my garden which i would like to grow ivy on.
Could anyone recommend an ivy that grows fast, is evergreen and isnt too fussy on the conditions?

Thank you :)

All ivy grows fast, is evergreen & is not fussy

You only have to choose the leaf colour, deep green, variegated or what

Have a look at http://www.eastcheam.co.uk/ for loads of varieties of ivy

Last year I decided I wanted to cover the side of my house with Ivy and researched the fastest growing. I was told Hedera Helix 'Oro di Bogliasco' was the one for me so I sent off for a plant from Crocus (they sell it for £7.99 at the moment).

It says it is slow to establish but then grows fast. I planted it around May/June time and it has been very slow to establish but I'm hoping it will take off this year.

Sorry I don't know how to do a link to it, but just search on the Crocus website (or google it). It's very attractive with veriagated evergreen leaves.

This is a general comment for those who have not got a rustic fence. Buy the Ivy that doesn't grow on your house and gets in behind the cement and eventually pulls it away from the brickwork or even grows under the roof tiles/slates and into your attic, and the one that doesn't allow Rats to climb up it and enter your house. Horrible stuff!!!!!:easter:

I had a small ivy that I planted to grow up a fence. I spent 3 hours and hubby spent 2 more tyring to remove it from every orifice near the fence. It's even found a way into the shed .
I'm sure we'll be finding off shoots for a long time to come and it's totally ruined the fence panel.

Plant any kind of ivy you like. ;)

I worked as a gardener for ten years, and earned a respectable amount of money removing ivy from gardens.:D

Sensibly though, I grow a large leaved variety, Paddy's Pride, which doesn't cling very well, and needs to be tied in. Elsewhere, I have what used to be called Goldheart, which is desperately slow and keeps reverting to plain green. Glacier is nice, variegated in white, although I've just removed most of it where it starting galloping up the house wall.

    Spiders love it too.

My fence was completely ruined by ivy. Its also a nightmare to kill when you realise it's ruining your fence.

Why not have a nice clematis instead?

I too spent last weekend trying to remove 2 ivy plants from growing up a garden wall, i think it will take a few more goes at it before it's gone. I agree with conradmum, a nice clematis, or honeysuckle
  • I killed mine with sbk only took one application
Nothing to see here, move along.

Local housing society near us has just gone round the houses ripping off ivy from walls as it was too damaging over time.

It looks lovely imo but it's too invasive and quick spreading for my liking.
