:T Foundations are ok, lintel above window ok but just to be on the safe side having structural engineer round to double check and approve the roof construction.
Plans being formally submited by Monday at the latest - just worried that vat will go up to 20% after the election and push up an already escalating budget:(

Was thinking about starting a blog - not that I'm sure how to set it up but I'm sure I'll find out somewhere - wondering if people would be interested though ... I looked for something similar that was up to date and couldn't really find anythingTarget of wind & watertight by Sept 20110

There's a thread on here called 'first time renovation', probably on page 2 or so now. It's a great thread and many of us post in there with our renovations. Doesn't have to be 'first time; either
There will be help and advice and blog advice there too!0 -
Yea I've seen it - it's great isn't it
I just haven't found anyone who's lifted the roof a metre recently. If anyone can point me in the direction of before and after pictures of this sort of thing that would be fab:T

I'm just trying to get my access to the next floor sorted before I submit the plans for plannig permission. I'm losing a study (taking out a stud wall to open out some space) and have tried to get a straight staircase in but I'm struggling for space - the study is 2.7m x 2.2m with a window in the middle of the 2.7m.
I'm seriously considering a spiral staircase has anyone any experience/advice? Our plans include a first floor set of french doors onto a deck so we're anticipating getting the furniture etc upsatirs through those doors not up the stairs.
Any thoughts?:)Target of wind & watertight by Sept 20110 -

No, not a spiral staircase, kids hate them, with 2metrs plus you can accomodated a standard staircase with 2 quarter landings.
Let me try to explain.
All the way down a metre wide, minus 3 or 4 steps. Metre sq landing gets you 90 degrees, drop down a step, and turning 90 more gets you to 2 mtrs wide, ie, you have turned through 180 degrees in 2 metres, 1 or 2 more steps down and presto:TI like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0 -
Gizmosmum - firstly my Haynes Loft Conversion manual arrived today - the first day in our new home - I have only had chance to look at it briefly so far - but I can already see how useful it will be so thanks again for the recommendation
Secondly - our last but one home was 4 floors with a spiral staircase. Never again. It was actually no problem getting furniture up - but equally no problem for dust to fall down to the hallway......constantly!Downshifted

If you need a stair, then Ive just bought one from these guys. https://www.loftplace.co.uk
My glass stair was worth every penny and makes my house a million dollars.Kind Regards

Happy house warming Downshifted - my neighbours have been moving recently and had loads of hassle. Put me off for ever!!
Not keen on dust falling down the spiral staircase ... or the cost to be honest!
I'm struggling to work out where the stairs will go - mainly because the wall where you could put the first steps has a window starting from about 1 metre high so the steps would cross in front of the window slightly - I think....
I'm liking the sound of the glass staircase, especialy in a small space but what about the dust - and cost ....
I can't have space savers (don't want them anyway) because there's going to be more than one room upstairs.
Here's my dimensions - any suggestions welcome.
As I stand in the doorway this wall is a stud partition into the hall and could be removed if necessary. It's 1.6m from the door to the wall on the right. The walls on either side of this are 2.2m long - no windows. The wall facing is 2.8 metres wide with a 1000m wide by 1200mm long window in the middle of the wall starting about 1 metre up the wall.Target of wind & watertight by Sept 20110
