You could try Freecycle and see if someone will come and take it away for nowt. Seriously ... this has been done a number of times.

Skip companies are regulated and have to comply with endless regulation about dealing with waste - hence the cost.

But if someone locally simply wants hardcore to build a drive or access track, they will gladly take it off your hands.

All of our rubble from a demolished garage was taken away for nothing and a local person used it for a new driveway - so it can be done. Worth a shot?

I would second that. Advertise in your local free ads paper.

Alternitively can your car tow a trailer? It may be worth hiring or even buying a cheap trailer to take it to the tip.

  • You could contact your local council, don't know if it varies from region to region, but when I was getting my new kitchen put in I rang the local council and found that you are allowed 3 collections per year amounting to no more than 8 black binbags per collection. You have to tell them whats in the bags otherwise the men won't take when they don't know the contents. Or, if thats no good, bag it all up and take it to your local tip free of charge,if you've got a marra with a van, or a car and a trailer, worth a go.

Don't know if it's nationwide but at my local council(recycling centre) tip,you have to pay to dump(sorry recycle) rubble, concrete etc. They charge by the size and weight of your trailer.
Also a van, signwritten or not,is classed as a commercial vehicle and not allowed in unless you hold a business account.

Same here. I took a load of plaster board up our tip and they wanted to charge me (but didn't, not that I had any money on me anyway and it was already in the crushanator)
Nothing to see here, move along.

A skip would cost £80-100 max.

If you don't want to move all the rubble yourself ask a few friends for some help and buy them a few beers for there help.

I don't know what area you are in, but round here (Berks/Bucks border), skips are more than that! Average around here for a 6 yard skip is £120 to £140. For an 8 yard skip it's around £150 to £170.

Currently doing an extension at the moment.

Have had three skips in the past 2 months. 2 @ £170 and 1 @ £335 .....PLUS VAT!!!!

And that was in addition to the hardcore that was taken away for free!

Why not place an ad in the paper or at your local diy superstore "free hardcore to collector" and see what happens, you might get lucky and it won't cost the earth to try.

I actually needed some hardcore last year for a patio project I had planned and because my garden had a fairly large downhill drop, I needed to build a retaining wall and back-fill. Luckily my neighbour a few doors away at the same time was demolishing a huge outbuilding, so we did each other favours on this one - they used a man with a van but it cost them £200 per load. I reckon we saved them about £1600!
:D Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!:D
