Replacing fuse box

Approx 5 years ago we had a letter from Transco I think it was, advising us we needed to have our fuse box replaced, and that they would be around to do this for us, free of charge.
Anyway, when they came they said the couldn't do the work as the box was enclosed behind a brick built fireplace and that to have the work done we would have to demolish this.
At the time we did not have the money to redecorate after knocking the fireplace down entirely, so I knocked part of it down, made good and contacted them to return and have a look if they could fit the new box.
To date they have not been back and we just forgot about it.
Is this something I should be looking to get done and who would I contact?

[SIZE=-1]To equate judgement and wisdom with occupation is at best . . . insulting.

Transco, used to deal with gas. Now its National Grid who do gas and electric.
So are we talking electrics or gas?
The fuse box is normally the home owners problem as it is inside the meter.
They may have wanted to change you meter and the big fuse that is on there side of the meter.
I have no idea why and how any of this stuff is behind a fire! sounds very dodgy.
Maybe post a picture0 -
anything after the meter is the homeowners problem. nowt to do with transco or anyone else.

A weird one this, I would love to see a picture of the set up. I am not sure that we are getting the full story.I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.0 -
It might be the head of the incoming cable that needs replacing as I can't see how your fusebox would be buried beneath a fireplace but then again stranger things have happened in the past.0

That's why I asked for a photo. I am intrigued as to what has been done.I can afford anything that I want.
