  • Thank you all for your help, I was looking in Tesco earlier and just didn't know what to buy. I'll just wait for a non bio offer to come out then.Lillibet, I thought you had to wash all garments prior to use whether new or second hand, just to ensure they are suitable for sensitive skin. I may do a few things now just to freshen them up but I won't go mad and do everything.Thank you.

I buy Lidl non-bio as prefer the smell to tesco own. I dump a bag or two of soda crystals into the box and mix it together. Jacob's eczema was worse with things like surcare!!

  • Fairy non-bio made my son's eczema horrendous.

I don't use anything except Tesco non-bio as he doesn't react to that - however we have used it since birth and it may be because his skin is used to it.

re the washing of new things - i normally don't bother & had no problems with baby who has exczema, but ds1 did get a pant shaped rash once when i had to put newly bought pants from ethel austin straight on him after he fell asleep in car & had an accident the one time i had no spare clothes with us! they were very cheap if that makes a difference (he has loads at home so only bought as emergency - didn't want to spend a fortune & that was nearest shop!)

My son had eczema quite bad as a baby/toddler. I tried Fairy non-bio and other products geared to babies, but they all made the eczema worse.

He was fine with was bio Daz, so I just used that.

It was also trial and error with bubble baths and soaps etc. He's grown out of the eczema now, and just gets the odd mild attack. However I bought some unscented Morrisons bubble bath a couple of weeks ago and that set off an attack of eczema.
Here I go again on my own....

Why should either be different for the child? Was there a choice 30+ years ago - no! Did the children suffer - not as far as I remember!!
Clever marketing by the companies at foot I reckon!

I don't agree. 30+ years ago the ingredients were different and allergys much less common. Biological washing powders contain enzymes which are "breaking down" agents. Non biological don't so you will find that they aren't as good at removing stains but they are more gentle on the skin that a biological would be. I have always found Ecover to be good. It is a bit more pricey but it has never once brought my DS out in a rash like most other detergants do.

Another aspect to consider is the over use of detergent. So many people use more than is necessary which results in a build up of detergant on the clothes. I am sure manufacturers tell you to use so much so that the product is used up quicker. I have only ever used less than half the recommended ammount (I am stingy) and the other day I got absolutely soaked and my jeans were foaming!!!! Just goes to show how much stays on the clothes.

Clever marketing? Yes, my 2 year old scratches so hard she makes herself bleed because a TV advert tells her to.

Did the children suffer 30 years ago? Yes! My Nan had to scrub my mothers clothes in just water because the soap made her scratch so hard, she bled too.

Luckily for me, I have a choice of washing powders to do the same job.

Maybe, but I doubt you are a scientist and are believing what you have been told or read. Tell you what I'll agree to differ.
