So the w/m is connected by a FCU (fused connection unit)? As ormus says it is most likely the w/m rather than the socket itself, but only an electrician can determine that.
Most new houses will have at least three power circuits, upstairs, downstairs, and kitchen all on separate ring mains. then usually 2 lighting circuits, upstairs and downstairs. But it will all depend on the size and layout of the house. 'Side by side' downstairs is probably just one for the kitchen and one for the other rooms downstairs.

If the rcd is tripping then power is leaking to earth, either from the live or the neutral.

Is there a leak on the wm? Does it only trip at a certain point of the cylce, like when it drains?

it is one of those blank sockets with just a switch on (like oven ones) so i cannot see a plug? guessing it is somehwere or can they be wired up this way? our dishwaher is the same as far as im aware.

The sockets for the machines are most likely spurs off the switches and behind the washing machine and dishwasher.
