Car drove into my gate

Hi,

Someone has just driven into my gate causing damage to the gate post and adjoining fence panel.

They have said that they will pay for the damage, so I will find out how much it costs and the contact them.

If they refuse to pay, what official line do I need to go through to claim money from them? Do I need to contact the police to get a crime reference number?

Thanks,
Johnny D

    Have they committed a crime?

You should have got their reg number, insurance details and personal details. Then given them to your house insurers who would pay your claim a nd then recoup the costs from the drivers insurance policy.

S170 of the road traffic act has been complied with as you have exchanged details so it is not a police matter. If you do want to do it on an informal basis go for it, but if they don't pay you will have to go through insurance.
