I have an old Panasonic Home Theatre which the drawer doesn't open. We got a new Blue Ray player (not surround sound) & I am wondering how to connect one to the other so I can benefit with the suround sound from the old DVD player.

Can anyone please help me (in laymen terms) with what I need to do to acheive this?

Many thanks

The home theatre make is Panasonic SC-PT560 & the new Blue Ray is Panasonic BD60.
I seem to have done it. I attached a red & white plugged cable to each of the players and it works....

Youve connected it with an analogue set of left and right connectors

You can only get 2 channel sound this way

To get true surround (And your in luck), you need an OPTICAL cable

I have an optical cable from the old player into the Sky HD box. Where should I put it for true surround sound?

Both machines only have one optical port so you cant go wrong with that
if you want surround from BOTH your going to need an optical splitter (ebays prob your best bet for that, maybe MAPLIN for quality)

I just want surround from the new player using the old player as receiver. I have tried putting the optical from one player to the other & it didn't make any difference. The sound isn't too bad using the red/white cables. Someone at work suggested putting a 3.5mm into the headphone on the TV & a red/whits cable into onld DVD player, but that didn't seem to work.

blu ray has absolutely mind blowing sound, it supports lossless digital 7.1 format if you use the red and white leads you are getting analogue stereo which is crappy beyond crap

ideally you want optical out of the sky hd box to the receiver to get skys 5.1 dolby digital which is not bad quality (and is only on the optical port), and HDMI out of the BD player to the receiver to get the top audio formats, when no HDMI is available then you want optical out of the BD Player to the receiver.

this will allow optical out from both devices to the receiver

you may have to turn on the optical out on the BD player

    Youve changed your request now

if you just want 'sound' then the phonos will work fine

if you want digital surround sound you need that optical port

if it didnt make any difference then you must have the wrong setting selected (Youd have to check the manual for that). Also, if it didnt make ANY difference I suspect that your sky isnt in dolby digital surround either

Many thanks. I have changed the HD box settings to Dolby D & will change the HDMi cables round. So I don't need anything directly connected from the new BR player to the TV?

Sky only broadcasts dolby digital on movie channels so far as im aware.

And yes, youll need some form of connection to your tv (hdmi definitely being your best bet assuming you have a HD tv)
