Vista Internet security

Some of you may know about this virus but it's doing my head in now! Just when my kapersky expires, this happens!

I have tried to install some malware thing I was advised to install but I cannot do it! Vista Internet security will not allow me on the Internet at all!

I have tried restarting in safe mode but I still cannot get onto the Internet to download this!

I have tried using google chrome as well as I have 2 Internet browsers but neither work :(

now I have restarted my machine and all I have is my documents window that comes up with a black background. I cannot do a system restore using the options on windows help so now I am stuck. All I can say is thank god for my iPhone otherwise I would not be able to come online to seek help.

Can anyone help?

When I go back to work, I'm saving for a apple mac

although i expect someone will be able to give some more specific windows fixing advice i would suggest in the mean time to try and get hold of a linux disk (usually suggest ubuntu) and run in liveCD mode

for everyone who will jump on the 'linux spam' just note this is just a temp fix for the op until he can fix windows incase it takes a while

once in livecd ubuntu does have a windows antivirus which you can get and use to scan your hard drive, it should also allow you to get online and down load any drivers or other programs you might need to save to fix windows

if you cant get someone to download and burn of the disk, some of the linux magazines you can buy come with a disto cd to try
    Drop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
    10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
    20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)
  • My hard drive is refusing to boot, I give up now tbh

If you can boot. Shut down and restart in safe mode (tap F8 repeatedly during startup to get black and white safe mode screen). Click repair system and then open system restore. Choose a restore point prior to the infection.

    Go online and download this

update it and do a full scan , then post the log file it produces

    Someone else had this
If its the same type your in trouble

First try pressing F8 to get into SAFE MODE WITH NETWORKING. if no good try bring up TASK MANAGER

If neither work then your going to need access to another computer and burn data to disc. You could try linux as posted above. Id try DR WEB ~
    http://www.freedrweb.com/livecd/

get the disc to auto boot at start up (Do NOT load windows), and let it scan your drives

The beauty of a Live CD is that it does not need your hard drive to work, or even to be present!

All you do is put the CD in and reboot. The PC should start from the CD and the CD will run in RAM, not needing the hard drive, borked or not. (You need a bit of ram say 384MB minimum).

It is possible that the PC BIOS is set to prevent booting from a CD, in which case a small (and careful) edit to the BIOS settings will be needed to get the CD drive to be first in the booting order.

Once the PC is running from the Live CD, it will also be on the internet. (Note) This is pretty automatic with a wired (ethernet) connection, but will need wireless password and some setting up if wireless is needed. There is a chance that a Live CD may not be easy to work with some wireless stuff - some is written very much only for Windows, so still consider wired at first.

The Live CD running will allow copy off of your data onto USB or whatever, and as long as the machine is kept on, antivirus for Windows can be installed into the Live session and the Windows areas can be scanned.

At the very least you will be using a functional PC albeit 'Live' and you can use data with external drives.

There are plenty of Live CDs to choose from. Ubuntu is popular and has a lot of support, and I know it best. Knoppix (CD or DVD) is intended as a Live toolkit. There are lots of others.

    good luck

Note: Live sessions will not get malware, unless you install an untrusted application into the live session. So as long as the Live CD is trusted, a live session is a good way to stay secure.
  • Thanks for all your help, all i need is a working computer now to burn the disc! Thanks!
