Argh, I need to get this off my chest! and am looking for info as well
Just been into the garden and noticed that eldest(13) has let my 3yr old wreck my carrot seedlings, garlic, spinach seadings, corriander seedlings & many many more!!!!! while she was suppost to be looking after him for me.
Garlic bulbs have just be put back in the ground so no worries there
Rest of them are all in containers and the seedlings are still in there, is there any hope for them? or do I have to start all over again???
I'm off to pack kids bags now, time for them to move out I think :(
Rant over thanks

I'd just leave them........and the kids :rotfl:No sorry, seriously I'd just see how the seedlings go. Are you able to scoop the compost back in the pots without too much disturbance? Carrots should be sown straight into the ground, but it's not too late to resow other stuff. The stuff you mentioned are quick growing, so really no harm done, it's annoying I know, been there done that got the t shirt etc etc ;)
I get paid to smell great :j

Thanks for the advice, glad most will be ok :) I'll keep a eye on the carrots as they are in the container to be grown in so hopefully will be ok. Feel better now I've ranted :) I still have my digin carrot seeds so all is not lost :)

Whilst its clearly disappointing if damage is done, it might take until you start harvesting food for the 3 yo to understand what is happening. My youngest has just turned 3 but because he saw us digging things up last year, knows that the veg beds are not for digging up. (However he did want to carry on planting onion sets in every available space after I got him to help plant the ones I wanted planted!)

I guess it also depends on what you are aiming for. In my case of course I want some food, but I also want the kids to take part and learn so they also need to learn that if you dig things up early, you don't get to eat them. See if you can involve the younger one and give him a sense of ownership so he is as keen to protect them as you are.

My windowsill is currently covered with lots of pots of tomato plants, peppers & chillis.
Today I came in to the living room to see my 4yr old flying his toy aeroplanes through the FOREST he said (my plants!) when i told him off he said he was "a good pilot & wouldn't crash in to the trees because he knows they are special" yes it was one of them laughing/trying to keep a straight face, love em but could murder them moments!.
  • Get the 3 yr old their own patch that they can dig in.

You could do some fakery if you wanted - plant carrot seed one day and then a week later sneak out and put real carrots (with tops) in...

The wind blew my coldframe over last year and the seedlings were bounced about inside it until it came to rest in another part of the garden... I rescued what I could and most survived.... surprisingly.... so have hope....

By the way, I never had an upright plant .. daffodill etc until my son stopped kicking a football.... from the age of around 3 until he was about 16... the ball always landed on a treasured plant or bush.... so don't despair... they leave home eventually....
