  • Good price, especially for anyone looking for an answer machine / desk phone, with handsfree speaker functionality at the moment... RRP is £29, so this is just shy of 70% off.

Expensive to use though >> http://www.amstrad.com/products/emailers/e3_tariffs.html

    E3 Superphone - Tariffs

The E3 is subsidised by the use of the email service (as is similarly the case with most mobile phones). The sending and/or collecting of email has a fixed cost of 20p per session*.

Note that several email messages may be sent and/or collected in a single session, all for the same per-session cost.

So that you don’t miss any email, the E3 is set to call and check for email once a day. This can be increased if required. Calls to check for email cost 20p*. On quarterly bills this charge may be shown as approximately 90 separate daily calls.

One of the conditions of sale relating to this subsidy is that the E3 is used within the UK only – the unit will cease to operate unless it remains connected to a UK telephone exchange.

Note - a further condition of the subsidy is that from time to time you will see adverts displayed on the E3 screen (sent at no cost to you). You may respond to these adverts or delete them as you see fit.

The E3 incorporates Amsurf which allows connection to the internet enabling you to view low graphic content sites as well as a limited range of internet web sites. The cost of surfing is 5p* per minute at all times.

Videophone calls possible only to other E3 e-m@ilers.

    OTHER TERMS APPLY.

What are the charges associated with the E3 e-m@iler?

    • Email - an email session on the Amstrad E3 costs a fixed rate of 20p per call* regardless of duration, time of day or day of week. Note that you may send and receive several emails in one email call

    • Video calling - Normally 50p per call, plus the cost of the phone call. SPECIAL PROMOTION: until 01 January 2007 the 50p connection charge is waived so you only pay the cost of an ordinary phone call.

    • Internet Surfing - 5p** per minute at ALL times.

    • Photo send - 25p** per email with photo attachment.

    • MMS - £1.00** per message sent.

    • SMS - 50p** per message sent.

    • Games - Charges vary - view on screen prior to ordering.

    • Polyphonic ringtones - £1.50** per min and last approximately 2 mins 40 seconds.

    • FAX - £1.00** per fax message sent.

    • Electronic Greetings Cards: 50p** per message sent

*Email tariff until 28.02.06: 15p plus local rate; from 01.03.06: fixed fee of 20p per call. **Charges correct as at 24.02.06. Note these are the recommended rates as charged by BT and most leading telephone service providers. Some providers may charge different rates. If in doubt please check with your provider. Charges may vary.

Is there any way of switching the email retrieval off so that it doesn't cost 20p per day?

Further to what was mentioned about Linux, it looks like it could make a cheap internet phone. Being linux based, onboard vdieo, mini keyboard, mic and speaker some folk are trying to make an SIP phone out it. For < £9 bargain!

Still a work in progress, but a lot of kit for the price.
  • TAKE IT BACK FOR A REFUND !!!!!!!

BOTH MY SISTER AND MOTHER HAVE HAD THESE AND ENDED UP WITH A HUGE PHONE BILL !!!! OVER £300 IN ONE QUARTER.

There is no way of turning the email functions off and you get charged for every email and display.

these are a total rip off - we even contacted Amstrad to complain about it but there were not bothered. I even threatened them with Trading Standards as they are charging you constantly and most of the time you do not even realise.

BEWARE !!! Do not buy this item it will end up costing you a fortune
  • no need to take it back, there is a way to stop the charges

At work so doing this from memory, but should get the general idea.

Go into setup, there should be an option to change call settings, go into this and then set a dialing prefix up - I use 91. Then when the phone trys to dial out to retrieve the e-mails it does not comlete a call.

I found that about every 3 months I have to re-set the phone, but that's pretty easy

So 20p a day multiplied by 365 days in a year comes to £73 a year to run, even if you never make a phone call or send an email..!

I dunno why you bought it either!

Does that also mean you escape the adverts every few mins?
