Top Tips for Burping Babies?

Options
Our second son, just like our first (apart from being HUGE and delightful) has real problems with winding / burping post-feed. The milk is in his tummy sloshing around, but the wind that's with it is not coming out... he gets sad, we all get sad, he tried to sleep and then wakes quickly really upset.

Finally, after much jigging, we get the burp out, and a load of half-digested milk comes with it... he's then hungry and the whole process starts off again.

What to do?? We're already using Infacol, which seems to have helped a little... but only a little.

Anyone got any tips...

Try sitting your child on your knee facing you, then just rest your foot on the ball of the sole of your foot and rapidly jig up and down about (if you position your foot on the floor just right the nerves in your leg will actually do the job of regulating the speed and distance your leg travels which should only be about a quarter of an inch up and down try not to eject the child over your shoulder)the speed of a jackhammer, if you do this intermittently during a feed the wind will come up rapidly and generally without company, the more milk you allow your child to consume between winding the more likely you are to get a refund when winding!

PS throw the infacol in the bin never be in a hurry to insert chemicals or drugs into your child.

  • My antenatal teacher swore by this, and I have to say it worked for me.

Hold your baby so his head and arms are over your shoulder and the main body and legs are rested against your front, support baby with one arm and with the next continue to tap gently but firmly on the back and alternate with smooth circles on the back, again firmish.

The key is to getting the arms over the shoulder too, as this will open baby's body to allow the trapped wind to escape.

    Good luck

I swear by gripe water on a dummy and used it on both of mine since birth.

It settles upset tummies and stops them getting uncomfortable.

With regards to the burping, we take shifts, as I usually find what one parent can't shift, the other can :o Sitting the child up whilst holding under the chin with one hand and rubbing or patting (for about 20 mins lol) is my usual tactic!

  • My son used to suffer with wind so I used to sit him sideways on my knee, and under chin supporting...sort of move him around in a circular motion stopping to tap his back now and again....worth a try
    x good luck

  • When feeding with a bottle make sure that he is only taking in milk NOT air from the bottle. This means tip the bottle up so the milk covers theopening of the teet not half milk and half air. It is a bit of a knack at first.

Then after feeding I always put a muslin or towel across the shoulder and literally tap the baby's back and rub in circles. Just as though you are getting the air from a container to come to the top. I dont do much giggling as i have found the same as you projectile vomit. It is a lovely thing to do and you can rub quite hard in your back circles. Baby can be on your shoulder or leaning forward resting it's chin on your hand, thumb and forefinger holding their chin. Sounds uncomfortable but isn't! again havethe towel infront to catch any liquid accompaniment!!
If that doesn't work and the little burps dont come and you have an unhappy chap then there are some good gripe and wind relievers for babies.
    Good luck!

I used to lift mine up under their arms, with their body dangling, and slowly and gently move them up and down. Letting their body dangle like that stretches them, I suppose that's how it worked (but only do it for short periods of time or they may get fed up, lol!!)

I did that based on my own experience that if I have trapped wind, if I lift my shoulders up to stretch my body it sometimes shifts the wind.

You can also sit them on your knee facing away from you, back against your tummy. Then make gentle circling motions on their tummy. Again, this works on me, lol!! So does patting my back between the shoulder blades.

Mum, mum of three, who can't ABIDE broken sleep, lol.

ps, mine treated infacol as a starter, and loved it.

    Infacol is magic stuff.

Otherwise my hubby was always better at it than me - bigger hands seemed to help.

do you wait till the end of the feed, i used to stop halfway and wind mine then at the end too, also used over the shoulder method and sometimes have them sitting sideways on your knee with right arm across them and have them leaning forward on your arm while using left hand to pat their back
