you can often buy the same plate that the DVLA sells for less on new reg

they have heavy fees for retention or transfer to another owner, which if your buying it to use yourself straight away (12 months) are not a problem

I agree with Eric they seem to be okay, but you can't go wrong with DVLA, but anything with say just A3 *** will be costly, but I've just checked DVLA and depending on her initials they start from £250.
Thanks to all the competition posters.

Works out £1 cheaper on newreg for mine, after you realise they price without VAT and transfer fee, which you have to pay on top, and that the dvla include upfront. Works out dearer if you get charged the £5 for using the phone as well.

Check ebay and autotrader for cheap bargains.

Sometimes its cheaper to buy an old car then just a plate.

Anyone old enough to remember all the SUE plates in the 80's before they started withholding numbers they could sell for more.

Depends what you want - for something that doesn't already exist then DVLA direct is the best.

For something that's being sold on behalf of someone else I've personally used www.r4v.co.uk and could recommend them

DVLA is the place to go, no hassle, easy and all fees included. You may get a bargain on Ebay but it can be a painful process.
