Basically, you're right. Contracts auto-renew unless you tell them otherwise.

How can you have a phone bill for £300? Line rental is £11.54, Anytime is £4.99, total £16.53. So for 3 months that is £49.59.
To rack up £300 you must be making huge nos. of exclusive calls, so I suggest you look at what tariff you are on.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Your termination charges also make no sense. The highest charge you can have with BT for cancelling in a year contract for a line is £96 on a renewable contract. Do you also have Broadband in contract with BT for 18 months. The only explanation I can see is that you had Option 3 broadband for another 6 months totalling £11.75x6 + £25 cease charge coming to £95.50 on top of the £96? To get helpful advice you need to be a little more specific and breakdown the charges you were told, the bills you are getting and the packages you have.

Your 12 monthly contract only gets renewed if you don't tell them otherwise. They should have contacted you before your renewel date and asked whether you wanted to continue the rolling contract or not.

And the 12 month auto-renewing contracts are clearly marked, and are cheaper than the non auto-renewing. I suspect that a lot of people who are on auto-renewing contracts didn't even bother to read the terms and conditions. They just saw the cheaper price and went with it. More fool them!
