Ruined Dress

Options
Hi, Not sure if this is in the right place but here goes. My daughter took her £200 designer dress to be dry cleaned. It had some fresh orange & a butter mark on it. It came back the 1st time & still had the butter marks so they sent it off to another one of their places where they said they had different chemicals! Cutting a long story a bit shorter, it has been sent back 3 times & the last time it came back the dress no longer looked like the same dress. It is a satin type material & has lost it's sheen. It has been ruined!!! Can my daughter ask for compensation ??? Can she ask for the full £200 ? Will she have to pay for the dry cleaning that has been done on it ? Any help would be much appreciated. In advance thankyou

Didn't want to read and run. Firstly I recommend you see if you can get written confirmation of what treatment was carried out on the dress from the dry-cleaners. Also talk to them and see if they agree it has been ruined and what they offer - refund etc. Also dig out receipt for dress if possible or see if you can illustrate the cost somehow eg webpage as a starter for negotiation.

If they are not happy about paying you may need to get an independent assessment of what treatment was carried out and whether it is appropriate. You would be expected to pay for this initially and they re-coup the cost from the dry-cleaners if it comes out in your favour showing that the treatment was not appropriate.

on a personal note I would say they should have said if they did not think the stain would come out and refused to keep trying, otherwise it is their fault. However if they have in good faith followed manufacturing instructions and ruined the dress you may have to pursue the makers of the dress.

Thanks Judith, My daughter still has the receipt, she only had the dress at christmas & has only worn it the once. She is distraught about it! Really just wanted to know our rights when we go to pick it up.
