How to avoid an inferior item being returned

A buyer is going to return an item I sold because it is cracked and not working.

It was OK when it left here, but accidents happen.

I am a bit concerned because the buyer told me before purchasing that he/she had bought one from ebay recently and it didn't work.

How do I guard against getting the wrong one back?

TIA

If it doesn't get sent back Recorded or Special, maybe it will get lost in the post ;)

    What was it?

Has anybody any ideas on how to avoid being palmed off with a different, broken item?

    Thank you,

well it depends on the item
if its an item with a serial number/identifying features then you can
if not then theres little you can do
if you worry about this then you need to mark items before sending

    Yes.

I didn't worry until the buyer said it had arrived broken: too late to adopt your suggestions, I am afraid.

I don't think the worst of people and don't want to start.

Well, it is on its way back now. I had a chat with the buyer and still am not clear whether it was minor damage which I missed, or massive damage which cannot be accounted for, or most likely some exaggeration to strengthen the case.

Apparently the packaging was fine and in good condition, so I can't blame the courier.

    Ah well....

usually when i sold a fair bit i would ask for the buyer to provide a picture for me
if its a dodgy buyer it will often be the last you hear
if the picture shows genuine damage then you can see it
i was once on the other end with a cookie jar sent in totally lacking packaging
the seller was a bit narky till i supplied pictures of the smashed up item
