Advice / opinion on which car to get

    Personally, at that age I wouldn't be buying a French car as they often have electrical problems. Generally, they are considered more unreliable, but obviously that is huge generalisation as there will be many that are perfect - it's just luck whether you end up with one. In your price bracket I'd be thinking:

    Ford Fiesta
    Ford Ka
    Vauxhall Corsa
    Skoda Fabia
    Nissan Micra

    As someone said above have a look at HonestJohn - it's a very good no-nonsense site.
