My Lab puppy...well 10 months now has been going every month for his worming tablet and flea treatment. Costing in total about £17 every 4/5 weeks.

He is now 25 kilos and I called the vet today to see if he was required to go up or if i could just collect his worming tablet and flea treatment.

They said they wanted to weigh him again as he is still a pup to work out the strength of tablet to give him. He has always been on 1 tablet.

Anyways..thought I'd call the local pet shop to see how much their worming treatment cost and they were saying my dog after the age of 6mths should only require worming treatment 3/4 times per year.

Is this true ??? are my vets squeezing cash from me ??? They are a good practice, but are known for high prices compared to others around.

You vet is far more qualified than anyone on this board and *should* be more impartial and professional than the pet shop! You really ought to be asking the vet to explain, perhaps ringing round a few vets in your area for a price check. If you are not happy with the explanation or the price comparison take your puppy elsewhere. Are you seeing the vet or the vet nurse each time? It may be that the nurse can weigh and you can give the tablet which may make each visit cheaper.

I never wormed or treated my dog for fleas and never had a problem. I did get him at 6 months old though.

I worm my dog monthly but that's because he likes to eat cat poo!

If your dog doesn't eat droppings and is not in contact with wild animals etc, then every three months is fine.

Why not just ask the vet why he thinks monthly worming is necessary?

I put flea drops on my dog and cat regularly as my cat is allergic to flea bites and gets very sore if she has them. Again, it depends on your individual circumstances.

There is nothing to stop you weighing your dog yourself...

Worming treatments don't persist in the body hence the need to treat more often than you may think (as wel as reasons given above).

The grand majority of pet shop workers have zero training so I wouldn't trust them!

I'm gna buy his worming and flea stuff on-line....save some cash. £20 = 1 worming tab and flea treatment at the vet.

    £20 on line= 3xflea treatment + 2 worming tablets !!! :j
