Thanks for all the replys the insurance problem is getting sorted out. All the extra modifications are actual genuine vauxhall parts and as such were available as factory fitted options when purchased new and the fact that the previous owner didn't fit them my brother argued that they may have been factory fitted. DD are getting back to him shortly as to whether they will now insure him as the extras may technically be factory fitted options. If DD say no he has a choice of two other companies that when told this point of view offer much cheaper insurance, either way he is happy.

    Thanks for all the help.

Just want to add that some companies (I know that Elephant, Admiral did this when I got a quote with them), they will charge extra for your mods but will only replace the car with standard parts if it's stolen.

Basically, you're declaring the mods and paying extra just so they won't void your insurance if you had an accident and hadn't told them about the mods.

It might be different for optional extras but I'm not too sure.

If you declare everything on that car, to a company that deals with modified cars such as Liverpool Victoria or Adrian Flux, you are probally looking at around £4000-£5000, which, without any disrespect, is probally 4-5 times the value of the car!

If he wants a modified car, go for something like a 1.0, or if he wants something sporty there are some really nice cars like the Toyota Paseo (I have one, 17 year old = £1750 F/C with Churchills)

So I would recomend shopping around unless you and your brother are from a fairly rich background

I’m with direct line and am insuring a 1.6 Astra for sub £300 fully comp. They won’t insure me on my dads van though cos i'm young and dangerous
