Want to change supplier - cashback?

What do you want? Ongoing cheap gas & electric or the possibilty of a one off £70 bung?
(How much of a bung can you get from EDF? £40?)"Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -
I am looking to change supplier for Gas and Electricity and I was wondering if anyone had recommendations?
Currently with British Gas. Uswitch says I'd save most with EDF but EON are offering £70 cashback via quidco.
Any thoughts would be great.
I suggest you work out the total cost for the period over which you are likely to stay with your new gas/elec provider, taking everything into account, including :-
- Uswitch type comparison using actual Kwh units used
- Cashback offers via the likes of Quidco
- Hidden charges such as those levied for Independent Gas Transporter (IGT), on average around £42 per year. These are not covered on comparison sites so you need to add it yourself if supplied via an IGT
- How long does the tariff on offer lock you in with penalty charges.
I just did the same exercise a couple of days ago. Currently I use Scottish Power for gas, Swalec for electricity. Uswitch showed me that the best deal was EDF. And I could get £40 cashback via Quidco. However, EDF do levy IGT charges. A bit further down on the Uswitch list (only by a few quid) was British Gas websaver 6. When I factored in the £20 back via Quidco I'd get by going British Gas, and the fact that British Gas are the only provider not to levy an additional IGT charge, they were cheapest for me, so I opted for British Gas. The other factor was that with the BG websaver 6 tariff I am free of exit charges from August 2010, whereas EDF locked me in until either March or June 2011, can't recall which. I'd rather be free of exit fees earlier.

Thanks. How do I find out if I'm supplied by Independent Gas Transporter?0

Your gas bill should have a MPRN (meter point reference number) - if the MRPN starts with 74 or 75, you are supplied via an IGT.
I got this info via the gas/elec switching article on this very web site by the way - worth a look. This is where I also discovered that British Gas are one of the only providers not to levy the IGT charge.
