Watch batteries

My OH needs some batteries and I'm going for them this afternoon - can anyone guide me in the direction of some cheap reasonable quality batteries where they will also fit them.

I picking up her watch at her work in Edinburgh so any local info or of course any info on the jewellery chains, supermarkets (do they sell such things) etc would also be appreciated.

  • thanks - I'm sure there will always be someone who will say things are rubbish but at that price I don't think I would complain.

I had just been looking at Maplin website just before checking back here and was impressed by their prices.

I haven't used a watch for a while (in a drawer somewhere) so I'm a bit clueless about watch batteries.

My OH said I'll have to take both her watches to somewhere which has tools to open them but I'm sure I used to be able to prise them open with a knife or something years ago - have they really got so tamper proof now? Now where did I put that swiss army knife?
  • Phoned H Samuel and was quoted £5.99 per watch (need to get 2 batteries) then called Maplin who said they have a battery map so they can match up one of theirs with the original so hopefully its one of theirs at 99p.......or should I go to H Samuel for their wonderful OVERNIGHT service .......mmmmmmmaybe NOT.

Knowing that you are local to me! Try phoning Tempis Fugit(sp?) in Musselburgh and they maybe able to do it cheaper and certainly whilst you wait! The jewelers in Haddington used to be great for this kind of stuff unfortunately the owners have retired. You might find that Alis Cave in Musselburgh will also have batteries but the staff are not the most pleasant!

Another local place which might have them is Seans in Prestonpans ,High Street. Personally I think my first idea would be my choice!

Always check out your local market - watch batteries are usually cheap as chips! Or buy a new watch - usually only a couple of quid!!!

You will not find better prices than these ! Every type of battery for watches, cameras & phones, And very helpful. All prices include
P & P. I have used them for a couple of years. You can buy 1 or in bulk.

PS. Have just looked at site and now P & P is included for orders over £15 - under that it costs 99p extra! This is new I believe, but they are still very very good.

    I've been Money Tipped!
Buying another watch is a good idea to tide you ovet rtl you find a cheap battery. I bought a waterproof watch (50m) at Lidl many years ago for £2.50 and I only just changed the batery. It has a date and nothing else but the time and a good strong all in one bracelet strap which will never fail. My oh has spent about £30 in straps/batteries alone since I bought my cheapie.

That kind of local stuff is exactly what I was hoping for when I posted this - hello again Oscar and thanks.

The kind of friendly local place that would sort out the problem for the price of the replacement battery or little more seems to be on the way out - used to have a great place nearby when I lived in Edinburgh - I ended up going to Maplin at Dalry Road in Edinburgh (not exactly nearby though would have been OK if I was working that day). I have to say their customer service was very good (I had already managed to prise open the back of the watch anyway but I had been a bit reluctant to try it as I seem to be on a bit of a bad run at the moment - vision of losing a finger with the knife or even worse wrecking the watch).

Battery cost was 99p and I fitted it myself - brownie points for me.

    Thanks to everyone who posted.

Having been paying £5.99 for the jeweller's to fit my watch batteries for the past few years I recently decided to try to buy a watch battery from a small electrical shop locally & try to have a go at fitting it myself.

However, the guy in the shop took pity on me & fitted it for me & the cost was a very cheering 69p. :j No more expensive jewellery shops for me in future. :o
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.
  • Most modern waterproof watches can be opened with a pair of needle nosed pliers. Spread the jaws and locate in lugs across the diameter of the watch back and twist off. Works for my animal watch.
