In practice that seems to work nicely for me but I got hammered in uni suggesting that LOL. Seal and protect is a nice system for reducing sensitivity too.

Apart from getting the problem checked by your dentist and following up the other replies,

I would also remind people not to rinse their mouth out after brushing, as you wash the sensitive toothpaste away (this is true for all toothpastes).

Also check the flouride content of the Arm & Hammer toothpastes, they often have a low flouride dose (1100ppm) where most adults need (1450ppm)
:money: Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou to everyone who has helped.

Very cautiously, using only a very little bit of toothpaste, after brushing at bedtime, rub the toothpaste onto the sensitive area at the top of the tooth and leave overnight. It should improve in the morning.
Alternatively, consult your dentist who may be able to apply fluoride varnish to desensitise the area.

I suffer from sensitive teeth and use Sensodyne for brushing but I also squeeze a bit on to my finger now and then and rub it on my gums and not rinse after. That seems to hold it at bay.
You both beat me to it!

I also wonder if anyone can help me with this- Ive had a tooth/gum infection that my dentist does not think is a tooth/gum infection yet has advised me to use the cortysol mouthwash after brushing my teeth which has helped alot and stopped the itching in my gums!
Now I only do the leave toothpaste in the mouth/do not rinse thing a few times a month yet now my teeth are more sensitive then ever!

Can Cortysol mouthwash make sensitivity worse? and if so, does anyone have any solutions to this? I'd apply the toothpaste after the mouth wash but theres this part on the label which says that some toothpastes can stop the mouthwash working and the last thing I want is for the "infection/itchiness" in my gums to come back!

The advice is to use the mouthwash 30min after brushing- highly impractical i know. and of course go to the dentist to fully examine the teeth to make sure there are no other problems.

I've always suffered with sensitive teeth and also found that Sensodyne didnt do much good. The only one that ever worked for me was Colgate Sensitive but one day Asda ran out of that so I was forced to try Asda's own brand sensitive toothpaste... its FANTASTIC plus it costs about £1!! I'd definately recommend giving it a go. Oh and the leaving a bit of toothpaste on your teeth after you've brushed works a treat too.

Without getting boringly technical:(:(, latest research (this week's Evidence Based dentistry) says that 1000ppm Fluoride is fine so don't worry.

I'm suffering with this too at the moment. And i've not yet found anything to help. that said it's only been bothering me for about that past month. I have a daily routine of flossing, tooth brushing and then a mouth wash. I read somewhere that mouth washes can make it worse - is it best to not use one of these? I think mine is a comination of sore gums, clenching but not grinding in my sleep and also over burshing. I tend to brush for at least 2-3 mins.

I have sensitive teeth and use sensodyne pronamel which is the best I have found for my teeth. I never used to use a mouth wash ( shock horror!!) but then I got what I thought was an infection after having some dental work done. My dentist disagreed (though agreed the gums were inflamed...??) so I took it upon myself to start using cortisol.

I did not change my toothpaste, I did not stop flossing and my gum problem went away. But OMG did my sensitivity come back- really painful to drink anything which is not lukewarm or bite anything that is even slightly cold. Its that horrible dull ache which lasts for minutes after you eat. So I'd say yes, moth washes don't help sensitive teeth at any rate. I stopped using the cortisol and can now drink water no problems!

My gums are aching like mad today and i've been using listerine mouthwash for a week or so. Also sensodyne which hasnt touched it for me. Maybe this is more gum related so I think I will go back to the Cortisol. That stuff makes me eyes water like mad lol. I have been brushing twice a day and flossing every day I seem to never get out of the bathroom. lol. 2 weeks til dentist. Will see what he says. Not that I'm sure much can be done just have to perserve til I find something that works.

Rebekah, may I recommend in your case a little trip to the dentist a bit sooner to just rule out any other causes of your discomfort? In my practice we will try and accomodate people at an earlier date if the condition worsens, yours may do the same if you ask?
