Help! Utilities on moving

I am being a bit thick here. We're moving on Friday and only exchanged last week.

Do I need to take my existing utility provider with me? E.g. phone them today and tell them the new address and dates etc? Or do I need to take on the existing supply at the house we're going to.

Have been so busy doing other things that my brain has turned to mush!

  • You need to write to all your suppliers or visit their websites and inform them that you are moving. Then when you leave take meter readings and give them to them. The vendor should have done the same. Take readings when you get to the new property so you don't pay for any of their electricity or gas. You then can phone the new supplier (sometimes there is a letter waiting for you) and give your details. What you can do is find out what is the chaepest supplier before you go. However we are at a time when:money: says don't choose a supplier yet as the prices are all being changed. So you can stick to the supplier they have and when we receive instructions from MoneySavingtowers we can choose a supplier. so keep an eye out.
Oh and don't forget to redirect your post!
Good luck in your new house!!!

  • I just wanted to reiterate whats previously been written really. It is really important to take meter readings of your old property on the day you move and even more so in your new property or you could find yourself faced with hefty bills that are the responsibility of the previous owner. You wont have to pay for any utilities used before you move into your new home, but its an extra load of paperwork and phone calls that you could no doubt do without at this time. (oh yes, speaking from experience!)

Good luck with the move. Hope you are halfway unpacked by Christmas!
