I should think your eggs will be OK, they're not going to become poisonous overnight ! To check for freshness put them in a bowl of water. If they float they are stale but not necessarily bad to eat.You will know if they are off when you crack them open. If they are past their best I'd use them for baking rather than scrambling or omelettes.

As for sausages, I would be more careful, but if they don't smell bad you might want to use them if they were only a day out of date.

I would use both without any hesitation.

For the future, if you do have sausages going out of date, it is usually worth cooking them all and then using them cold for sarnies/hotpots/snacks etc.
  • i would use the eggs without hesitation....in fact yesterday and day before we all had fried egg sarnies and scrambled eggs as our eggs were dated on the 31st july.
as others say you can do the test on them if you would prefer it.

the sausages i would also use as long as they didnt smell or colour hadnt started to turn.

I never check the dates on eggs, I know I haven't bought eggs for 2 weeks but would still use the eggs that are in the fridge next week!

  • I would defo use the eggs without hesitation however I would be more careful with the sausages but as long as they didn't smell and looked ok, then yes I'd use those too. In fact I had a whole packet of sausages that had to be used yesterday, cooked all of them but only served up a few last night and will use the rest tonight. They only cost me 38p and got two meals out of them :money:

I've just eaten egg sandwiches made with eggs dated 27th so I hope I don't keel over:o .

I very rarely stick to the use by dates (although I find that stuff from Lidl goes off more quickly than stuff from M & S, funny that:rolleyes: )

OH was rooting in the fridge the other day and asked if the sour cream was out of date and started sniffing it, I had to ask him how he would tell if it was sour?:rotfl:

I've just baked a lovely cake with best before 17th July eggs. I just cracked them individually away from the mixture in case they were stinky!

Saussages however I would not use past their date. They might attack me.

I use everything past its sell by date so long as it hasn't grown legs and walked. Smell is the best of checking, followed by sight, followed by taste (following cooking) although don't swallow it if it's not right!!

If food is stored incorrectly it will not be good before it's use by date by people don't question it.....
