Orange (Wanadoo) broadband speeds

Options
Hi guys....as usual I need help !!

I have Orange (Wanadoo) broadband which has speeds up to 8meg. My phone line only allows 1meg. I use a wirless connection as my PC is in my office upstairs and main BT socket is downstairs. This means the fastest my broadband will work at is 54.0Mbps - so just over half it's max speed. However this often falls to 36.0 or 24.0.

2 questions:

With my current set up, is there anyway I can maximize my 1meg speed or at least ensure I can maintain 54.0mbps.

How do I find out when my phone line will be able to go faster than 1meg ?

Sorry for the waffle and thanks for the help.

Jimmy

You are getting confused here with the speed between your PC and Wireless Router (up to 54Mb) and your Broadband Line Speed (Up to 8Mb).

Let's deal with your Wireless Connection first. Unless it drops below 1Mb it's unlikely to have any effect on your Broadband Speed. If you are getting fluctuating Wireless speeds then you should try moving the router and checking walls/ceilings/obstructions that may affect the signal.

Your Broadband Service is 'Up to 8Mb'. This means you will get the fastest service your line can support. In your case this seems to be 1Mb. This is almost certainly to do with the distance you are from the exchange. Unfortunately it's unlikely you will get faster speeds than this anytime in the near future. If this is a problem and it is available where you live, you may want to consider Cable Broadband.

you have a 1MB line going throught a 54MB wireless signal... you will still only have a 1MB connection.

you max download speed is more than likely 100KB/s to 83KB/s

then because of the way wireless works there is added lag and time taken to send the packets to your laptop so you can expect to get alot less again!

there is a way to mess with your MTU setting to get it to send packets with smaller size but you will need to contact your ISP/router company.

with my linksys router and 16MB line i was told to set it to 1472 and keep dropping it by ten until i got a better download rate(increased by about 10Kb/s so no great difference)

    hope that helps

You can check out what you can expect to get from your exchange on the BT wholesale site, just bung in your phone number.

You can also check with Wanadoo to see if you can go faster inthe customer area.
