Job ideas..

Options
Hi Everybody!

I'm returning to university in September after taking a year out and would welcome any ideas.

I'm currently working full time in an office doing a very boring 9-5 which really doesn't suit me - I'm constantly bored as I need much more stimulation; and the fact that I'm pretty much fully extroverted means sitting in an office trying not to argue back at people on the phone doesn't really sit too well with me.

I'm trying to find another job to see me through until late September when I return.

Instead of just finding another office job, I'm thinking about something similar to Camp America (unfortunately the cut-off point for applications was 1st March). I was really just wondering if people had any ideas for avenues I could go down, and ideas for jobs I could look into.

I'm going back into Year 2 of a Sports and Exercise Science degree, with the current intention of becoming a college teacher/pe lecturer.

Any ideas would be welcome

have a look on your local council/leisure club/schools/housing association websites to see if they're advertising for summer workers. A lot of these groups hold summer schools, play days etc...
  • Hmmm, summer jobs are tricky to come by. What about being a lifeguard? The only draw-back would be the initial outlay of about £200 for the training course. It could come in useful though in your later career. I hear that local leisure centres are keen on this sort of thing because obviously summer holidays are peak season. Another random idea, could be working somewhere like Butlins. I have no idea when the cut off times are but that's obviously along the same lines as Camp.

If you are free all summer and would like to work abroad, have a look at Holidaybreak, they own Eurocamp and Keycamp. I spent a very fun summer in the South of France a few years back now. It was hard work tho, I was courier which meant cleaning accomodation, reception duties and night duties. Great chance to meet new people.

Have a look on their website, fingers crossed they haven't closed applications now.

It probably depends how important it is to you to earn money, as activity type employment doesn't pay well, but you could look at being an instructor with PGL or similar.
  • Thanks a lot guys!

I had forgot about lifeguarding, so thanks for reminding me, I'll definately look into it.

And also thanks for the ideas about other camps - I knew there would be others similar to Camp America, but wasn't sure where to find them!

had a friend who worked for a summer with PGL she had an absolute blast, didn't pay amazingly but she did get to do fun while working which is the main thing!

It might be the main thing for some people but not if you're working in order to save money for the next year. That's why I asked the OP about his priorities.

Money is fairly high on my priorities - I'm not so fussed about actually saving as I always managed when I was previously at uni, and I'm not obsessed with having money; as long as I can afford some beans and bread I'll survive.

My only problem is that I took a loan out in July and purchased a car. At the time it was a fantastic idea, and to be honest I don't regret it for a second. However, when I return to uni I will have to sell my car to pay off the loan, but will be about £1500 short on the repayments, so ideally I need to accumulate enough to pay this.

Anyway, thanks for all the tips guys, I will definitely have a look into all of them!
