#1. - one of these : http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=257315 if you can afford it means that :
- you can back up once a week automatically
- always have loads of spare room
- never need to keep more than one backup, unless you want to keep 2 for safety / additional insurance against corruption
- keep an additional separate copy of docs / pics / etc
- backup other computers if you want to
- plug it in the tele [ if your tele supports USB devices ] and watch movies / slideshow family pictures / video's that were on your puter and can now be seen on your big tele. etc
- the list is endless but the biggest benefit is if you get a bad virus you can get rid completely in about 5 minutes with a full restore, and no need to ask anyone for any help
I do intend getting an external harddrive in the future. The link you provide has this question though:
"Csn I use this to backup my pc hard drive? - David
Answer- The item is merely external storage so does not have the facility to backup a system hard drive. You could however use the drive with some form of 3rd party backup software which would then allow a full system backup to the drive."
#2. - re-writable are just like the ordinary DVD's, except you can ' rub them out ' and write them again and again and again !
I have used these on a dvd recorder in the past but they weren't always reliable so I stopped using them
Thank you for the advice:T richie.0 -
Theres also Paragon Backup and Recovery free edition, which officially supports Windows 7.
I couldn't make my mind up which one to use, so have got DiscWizard and this, but you only need one.0 -

Some brands do, some brands don't have backup / restore software already on the drive when you buy it. The Seagate drive I mentioned does not come with software installed
- no matter .. .. ..Win7 has the software and it works fine, both backup & restore
- be aware that anyone recommending a-n-other backup software should confirm that the restore works in [ just in case your O/S is completely goosed ] DOS mode !
- be confident that any brand will do you for Win7, with or without backup software, and it needs to be only the size of your current [ drive(s) ]Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. I try to be an even-handed poster and accept that you at times may not agree with these opinions or how I choose to express them, this is not my problem.
