    School 'cannot' apply a compulsary charge because school trips are 'extra curricula' and normal school day would have to continue with the trip or not.

    It is only because parents pay that schools can put on trips. I (as a parent and a teacher) would always pay because I see it as being in the best interests of my child. Some parents refuse to pay for anything and that is a shame.

    Our PTA now puts money to one side to help subsidise expensise trips like residentials etc.
