Acer problems

:(:cry:My Acer laptop is broken! Something to do with a 'complete failure on hard disk'

The laptop is only 7 months old and I have the receipt. Staples have offered to send it away (can take up to 10 days) but have said I need to back up my files (which I cant do as the darn thing wont let me!)

I believe the laptop is dual core, so how will I know if the pictures and files etc are on the broken bit or not (apart from getting it back fixed with no personal info on there at all?!) I have a separate external hard drive but not all my stuff is backed up

Sorry I am not tech-savvy! :rotfl:

cheers
Em

When you switch it on, what happens?

Complete failure, would normally indicate you aren't going to get any data back.

    Two choices:

    1. Create a bootable CD with ubuntu on it:

This means downloading ubuntu, writing it to a CD, and making sure it's bootable. You then turn the Acer laptop on, go into the BIOS, set it to boot from CD, insert the CD, turn the laptop off then on, and it then loads ubuntu. Wait a few minutes and you'll be able to copy your documents to an external HDD or USB stick.

    2. Take the HDD out of the laptop and connect it to another PC using a caddy. It'll then appear like an external HDD.

Dual core wont make a difference - it will only have one hard drive (although often partitioned as two).

It could be something such as Windows being corrupt (in which case the Ubuntu Live CD method would work). Failing that, you can buy a caddy and put your HDD in that to back the files up.
Nothing I say represents any past, present or future employer.

Dual Core means it has two CPU's and is nothing to do with where the data is stored.

When you try and boot it up what happens? Can you post the exact error message?

Having said that, what davidmt83 has suggested is aas good a way of any of getting the data off it that you need.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

Instead of going back to Staples, go direct to Acer. Your laptop should still be under warranty and as long as you registered it, you should get support from them. By going back to Staples, you may be getting a Staples tech support to try and "fix" your laptop.
