How long should I wait before opening a not-paid dispute on eBay?

The other week, I sold a necklace on eBay. A week went by and I hadn't received any payment so I sent the buyer a message giving her another week to pay before I'd open up a dispute (so that would be 14 days after the auction ended). She paid 2 days later saying she had been off work ill and had no access to the Internet at home (she had a good rating so I believed her and this was fair enough.)
But last Saturday I sold a handbag and the buyer hasn't paid yet. Would you say what I did with the above case was fair or am I being too generous?
Thanks.

Too generous.
I send a payment reminder on day 4. And open a NPB on day 6 (you can do it from day 4). Then a strike on day 8.0 -
Okay. Thanks for the advice

I think Day 6 is a bit harsh. I usually just send a payment reminder (invoice) everyday for a week. After that I will send a non payment dispute.
Some sellers get grumpy if you haven't paid in a couple of days, which is a little stupid of them. To be a good seller you need to understand that buyers differ. A new member make take a while to pay. An experienced member may pay straight away.
In conclusion to my ramble, I'd say 7 days before you feel the need to open a dispute.I'M NOT AS THINK AS YOU DUMB I AM...

Each to their own. But I am a business seller, I believe 6 days to pay is more than enough. I sell volume amounts and don't find this a problem, my software is automated to send reminders, NPB's and block bidders who fail to pay by day 8. Conversly, I despatch same day, send on a fully tracked 48 hour service and have 5 and 4.9 across the DSR's.0 -
I'm just a private seller so I'm not overly fussy about not receiving payment within 24 hours or whatever. I let me auctions end Saturday evening and I post them Monday afternoon, giving almost 48 hours for payment.
Anyway I just looked and the winner is a regular ebay user with over 100 feedback ratings and at 100% score. So I'm prepared to give it a few more days. I'll send a reminder earlier than I did with the previous case though, I like that suggestion.0 -
I send a second invoice on day 3 with a reminder on day 4 and open a npb on day 5 if i've heard nothing from the buyer. If they bother to get in touch thats fine and i'm happy to wait longer if they give a reason for delay but if they can't respond in 5 days then i think thats a bit rude on the buyers part. After all they still have 7days to pay from the opening of the npb. Which tends to be when they pay.0

File it as soon as you can 6/7 days is more than enough time, there are so many timewasters on Ebay it is frustrating!
They can't want the goods that much if not paid in a week!0
