    How do I do that?

    There's a guide here.

You may be forced to upgrade to Microsoft Update (I don't know, I've never used Vista) but that's not a problem as long as all of your Windows products are legit (perhaps something you should not assume, given what we already know about the person that supplied it to you).

Hang on, are seriously saying that you were charged £1,500 for a PC with the above spec, and a printer that costs about £50? And which presumably came originally with only 1GB of RAM (never enough to run Vista on anyway), which he subsequently increased (and charged you for) to 2GB RAM?
If this guy is still trading, please could you post his details so other people can avoid him?

Certainly. These are all the details I can find. His website doesnt work though.

Actually the windows products were not legit (even though I asked that they would be), but I paid to get everything last year, so they are now.

I have a PC with similar specification, but with less RAM and running Vista Ultimate, so the specs aren't the problem.

Maybe you can begin with a scan using Malwarebytes' AntiMalware.

Once you have run the scan, choose 'Remove Selected' if there is anything found.

I have tried this and it is giving me the following message:
    C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes'\Anti-Malware\zlib.dll

An error occured while trying to replace the existing file:
    DeleteFile failed; code 5.
    Access is denied.

Click Retry to try again, Ignore to skip this file (not recommended), or
    Abort to cancel installation

When you load it up, right click and run as adminstrator instead of double clicking.

See if that makes a dfference.

His homepage appears to be a list of second hand cars for sale?
I do hope you didn't buy one of those off him as well...:o
Seriously, he appears to have charged you at least 2.5 times what the PC and printer/monitor were worth, so I very much hope he's not still in business.
And then to add insult to injury, he installed pirated software as well?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

    Yes.

I built a computer 3 months ago for £800. I got AMD Phenom II X4 2.8, 4GB, 1024MB Graphics. Monitor (HD 21.5" from Dell). Keyboard. and crappy speakers.

    I can't believe £1500 for that 2 years ago!

I think it was more like 3-4 years ago - I cant find the original documents as they are all filed in our lock up.

He was still in business last year when I rang him at the end of my tether when I had lost vital files.

Because I have no idea what I am doing re computers (which he knew when he sold me it) I didnt really feel like causing a big fuss I just wanted my files found and it sorted. I didnt want to ring him again when it still didnt work.
