I tried stamping my feet but it didn't work, I have ordered my MAC now so as soon as the fault is fixed I'll be off.

Can't figure out why I can dial out but not receive incoming calls?

As far as I can see, you took out your Plusnet contract only 2.5 months ago in Jan '10, so you will be on either a 12 or 18m contract. If you use your MAC now you're going to have to pay a substantial early termination fee.
They're not going to release you from your contract because of one or two days downtime.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

I paid £40 for a monthly rolling contract as I was a bit unsure about the deal.
    Good job I did.

If you have a dialtone and can make outgoing calls but have no incoming calls you could try dialing 17070 ( or 917070 if you have normally dial 9 for an outside line) and if you get a voice prompt like ' the number is defined as ********** 1st check its your number, prompts should continue' line test facilitys...', chose the option for the ringback test, hang up and see if your phone rings, if no ring, still pick up to follow the rest of the voice prompts...depending on if you are still connected to the BT exchange ( even though a Plusnet customer) you may have a fault in the exchange which can be fixed without anyone needing to visit you, 17070 may only work on BT (or resold BT) and not on a full LLU set up

Firstly I think I should mention the phone rang last night, someone managed to get through although he did say he had been trying all day.
Half an hour after I tried the landline from my mobile and it wasn't working again, strange.
This morning saw no change, still not working.

I just did the BT line test and it rang so I don't know what that means.
I tried from my mobile and it actually rang:) did it again, rang again:)
Just did it again , didn't ring:(

The faullt is inconsistant but still remains a fault, still no contact from PLUSNET apart from a few emails about "MY QUESTION" which I think refers to my complaint/fault.
The last email sent last night said:

I presume you have already tried swapping the handset for a known working one in the initial tests that Plusnet would have taken you through?
Is your broadband down, or just your voice telephony?

Broadband is fine, voice telephony is sort of down as I can ring out but not receive incoming calls.
I have 4 cordless handsets, No. 1 sits in the main base in my office, the other 3 are all scattered around the property in smaller plugged in bases which are just for charging and keeping the handset upright. Only the main base is connected to the phone socket.
I did try plugging the main base into the test socket in the front bedroom yesterday and it still didn't work.

Reading the posts above,It sounds to me like a problem at the switch or in the line card.Fairly simple fix (for BT Openreach that is....)

I see you've unplugged the base station from the mains and reconnected it again (my daughter had EXACTLY the symptoms you describe last week and that was the solution - the problem was a 'confused' DECT base station).

What you haven't tried is a known good corded telephone though (the problem may still be the DECT base station).
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
