I found a lemon grass plant in my local garden centre and bought it! (I think it was about £3).

Also, the two stalks that I had 'marinating' in the jar, put out roots and I have now planted them in compost - hope they will take on as well. One thing I did after no progress with the stalks in a jar for a week or so, put a couple of granules of plant food (miracle gro), after which they seemed to do much better. Maybe that is the trick?...

ah ha, so the trick is some miracle gro, eh.. well, i won't need to now i have a potted plant. the plant i have is still in my greenhouse and i reckon it'll stay there throughout the yr now till i overwinter it. it's put on a bit of growth and the roots are just starting to show through, so that'll need potting up later. i thought you did so well with your home-rooted stalks that you wouldn't be tempted to buy a pot. it'll make an interesting competition to see which plant will do best this yr, won't it?

ps. how's the kaffir lime tree/plant? happy in it's new home? i'd like to grow one of these too, but i think i'll wait to see how well it'll do for you first...

It seems to be doing well so far. I have actually took it outside now and it has been there for a couple of weeks. Fingers crossed I won't kill it too soon!
