What is all this about?

I recieved an email from ebay, headed - NOTICE: eBay Communication Partner Warning

It seemed to basically suggest something was offered for sale outside of ebay.
They mentioned the id of a seller whom I had asked a question while the listing was still running .
All I asked was - could you pls confirm items are new and not refurbed and is the postage per item.
I don't quite know what it was all about

Anyone any ideas

I don't think it was a spoof, it also came through on my messages and had my name on it.

sometimes you get this if they think you are trying to complete a sale outside of ebay ( ie how much to end this auction, i'll pay cash )
if you are genuine dont worry !

Don't eBay send you these type of messages when you've been in contact with an eBay member whom they have concerns about, e.g. a scammer. I think it's just to warn you about them and dissuade you from entering/completing a transaction with them.

I must admit the item did seem a bit dodgy. It was for 20 New ipod nano 4gb still in sealed box. Postage 4.99. item ended for about £2100. I have just attempted to look the listing up and there is an ebay message. This listing (#120015189493) has been removed or is no longer available.

The old adage " if it looks too good to be true then it probably is" rings true.

    thanks for the wise words
  • Hi

Today, I've received 5 alerts from ebay with the following message [see bolded letter below]... each alert names a different person - all silly names like fywaepm or mtigonq ... but I have had no communication from these people, through email or otherwise .. I've only had questions from 3 buyers recently, and theyre not the people listed in the alerts.

I'm really concerned about my security now, and have changed my pw and such.

Does anyone know why I have received these? I've responded to one, and asked ebay whats going on. I assume, as it's in my ebay inbox, and it's an official alert, that it's genuine. They were sent to my ebay email too, but I havent responded from there, just through my ebay message system.

Any hints or advice on whats caused this would be appreciated.

All my current communication with buyers has been done via ebay message system, and not through email and all my items for sale and communication is 100% above board. I havent bought or sold anything for at least a month, and I have items for sale which I listed on thursday

    NOTICE: eBay Communication Partner Warning

    Dear XXX:

Our records indicate that you recently sent an email to or received an email from mtigonq through the eBay email system (for example, you may have sent an email to this member through Ask Seller a Question or received an email from this member through Contact eBay Member).

Sometimes eBay accounts are used to send email solicitations for transactions outside of eBay, or to send unrelated questions in hopes that you will respond so that the other party can obtain your email address. We wanted you to be aware of the potential fraud risk these solicitations pose and encourage you to be cautious about the email you received from this member.

Please keep in mind, sales that take place outside of eBay are not eligible for any eBay or PayPal protective services and you run the risk of losing your money or your item if you complete these transactions. We would encourage you to review the eBay pages related to Fraud Protection at the address provided below for information on steps you can take to ensure that your transactions are successful:

Should you have paid for this item, please write with details through our "Contact Us" form found on the page below:

  • after doing a search for all the names. they all seem to be registered for less than a month, and some are no longer registered. all with 0 feedback.

maybe they tried to spam my email today.

I'm wondering, if I buyer asks me a question, is it best to hide my email address from them? I always show my email, but maybe hiding it will help prevent spamming [if this is spamming that is]
