Not really debt related but......

I usually post quite a bit in the house buying forum but need some advice regarding a job. Some people in here give brilliant advice and after posting this on a Job forum and getting no replies I have decided to try posting it here in the anticipation of some fabulous advice........

So here goes.....I have recently had two interviews for a position and just been called by the Area Manager to offer me the job (yipeee). It's exactly what I'm looking for, however, its about a 20 mile journey and also the basic salary is exactly the same as I'm on now, the commission is much better and there are more opportunities within this conmpany which is why I'm so tempted to take it.

The company want me to start asap and I am about to hand my notice in tomorrow. I have 2 questions

1) If my current employer were to offer me more money to stay should I go to potential employer explain this and ask if they will match it.....or is this just too cheeky?

2) If they don't offer me more money is it out of order to tell potential employer that they did in order to negotiate on the salary they have offered?

I do want the new job but have to weigh up that I will be paying out more travel costs etc.

What does everyone think?

PS sorry for the long post and thank you in advance

    1) If my current employer were to offer me more money to stay should I go to potential employer explain this and ask if they will match it.....or is this just too cheeky? I dont think its cheeky, but you have to be brave to do it. If they want you they will pay for you, consider yourself to be a negotial asset to their business.

    2) If they don't offer me more money is it out of order to tell potential employer that they did in order to negotiate on the salary they have offered? I wouldn't because I would worry it might backfire on me. But those that are far braver than me would do that. Doubt it would be illegal to try your luck.

I do want the new job but have to weigh up that I will be paying out more travel costs etc. You hae to weigh up short term against long term, never that easy to do.

What does everyone think? Go for it, and good luck.

Thanks Chatta for your speedy response.

It's so hard to make a decision. I count my blessings that I've already got a decent job and here I am being offered an even better one and I can't decide. The thing is that they have already told me that they are desparate for me to start so perhaps this goes in my favour. I guess I don't want to sound as if I am ungrateful i I ask for more money.

If you really want the new job i would'nt do number (2) - as you could lose the opportunity and not get anything in return. At least with number (1) you gain either way.

If your current company matches the new job offer - you can then decide if you want to move or not, even if the new company doesn't want to match it. However if they want to beat it, even better.

Be brave - you are a valuable asset - if your current company matches or betters the new offer, you are proving that you are an even more valuable catch. If they don't - you haven't lost anything as you have been offered another job anyway.

    Hi,

If I were in your position i think i would be considering the same tactics. I do a 74 mile round trip to work because I love it, I could do the same job 9 miles down the road but it wouldnt have the same long term prospects. With regard to asking for more money I think you should try it... if you dont ask you dont get! The worst that can happen is they say no, in which case you flatter them by saying how great you think their co. is and cant wait to join them, surely they cant relinquish their offer, plus if you play it as if you are being completely up-front with them they may appreciate your predicament!

Hope that makes sense, been having trouble forming sentences today... need sleep! good luck and let us know how it goes!

    1) Like Chatta said, its not cheeky to negotiate, but you have to be prepared to be turned down. I would love to be confident enough to do this....I'm usually just greatful to be offered the job I never think to try and negotiate a better salary...I tend to think.......I applied for the job at 'this' salary, so I think I would then feel cheeky to turn around and say well I want this salary instead...

But I have known people who have done it and been rewarded handsomly (He was a cocky git..but it worked!), I think he went straight to the top of the grade he'd applied for (would have taken 3/4 years normally).

    2) Again, it could backfire, but are they likey to check with your current employer?

I think it would be unlikely that even if they take up references they would ask if current employer had offered me a payrise to stay.

In the past I have just been gratefull to have been offered the job and I've never negotiated my salary, I just think that I should this time.

I will let you all know how i get on......wish luck....fingers crossed and all that.

I would do neither of them, it just gives the wrong impression. Be honest. If you want more money, tell them so. Explain that taking this job would increase your costs, that you're worth it, whatever.

If you're not careful, you might lose both ways.

JMHO. Hope it works out for you.

Good it seems so far we are all agreed. Sounds like you are a valuable asset to both jobs, and its down to you as to how far you push both of them, consider yourself to be an auction item. It sounds like you know you can do both jobs, but need a bit more faith in what you think you are worth. What about thinking about which company will still be around in 10 years time. Might put a different perspective on your thoughts.

My top tip is notwage related but

DO NOT HAND IN YOUR NOTICE UNTIL YOU HAVE A NoN CONDITIONAL OFFER IN WRITING

All medicals done, references checked, etc.

Otherwise if they withdraw the offer and you've given notice - you are stuffed!!! There are some horror stories about this on the jobs board-people with two jobs one week and none the next!

It might mean you start a week later- but keep yourself safe.
