help with US dollar banking

Hello
I'm hoping somebody can help me out with this. I've got a job on a cruise ship based in Miami from November this year for 6 months. I have the option of being payed in US dollars cash on board, or having a bank transfer set up.
Obviously the bank transfer could prove costly as lots of banks charge for incoming international payments, plus obviously having no control over the current exchange rate.
However, being payed in cash on board isn't great as I need somewhere in the US to put it!
The third thought is to get a US dollar account based in the UK. However all the accounts i've seen have a minimum annual salary. Citibank's seems the best as I could withdraw money for free from their ATM's in the US. However annoying I don't have a large enough annual salary for the account.
Does anyone have any experience of being able to get a US account whilst working there? (eg HSBC)
Thanks in advance,
Martin
