get off your butt and do something about it !

be honest with the people you owe money to and dont be unrealistic , they have to accept a reasonable offer of repayment.

stop smoking

stop drinking

start using "basics " products instead of marks and spencer

"if you owe the debt , dont try to deny it " it wont help ..............

When taking out new credit work put your own Affordability. Just because a lender gives a limit of x or offers mortgage of y doesn't necessarily mean you should take it all. You know your financial situation better than the banks do, use this info. Take two people, same income, same mortgage payment, CC balance, same council tax, utilities bills etc etc but one smokes and shops at M&S, the other is a non smoker and shops at lidl. To the banks they look the same affordability-wise but the latter person can clearly afford more debt than the former. Set your own limits!

In short, use your noggin instead of saying the bank gave me £5000 limit and I spent it and I can't afford it and it should be written off cos the bad bank shouldn't have given it to me.

    Accountability.

    Thanks my 2p worth

Aint nothing wrong with going to Markseys for food. I spend £40 a week in Markseys and we always have something for dinner. When i went to tesco etc. to get the stuff for the same meals it would cost about 80 quid.

otherwise i do agree they only get worse the longer you try to ignore them.

  • Agree entirely. Having had around £40k of unsecured credit card debts and almost drowning in a sea of dispair, I turned to this site in 2005 and completely changed my attitude to debt and money.

Now we only buy what we can afford, when we can afford it. It's not about frugality, but its about the relationship we all have with money. And just like any other relationship, we can set the terms of how we behave!

Good point well made diggerman123. Even if this site inspires just 1% of the folks who come here in deep doodoo. If collectively we can help them get sorted out and back on track, then it's time well spent, in my opinion.

    CONSOLIDATION USUALLY DOES NOT WORK

I keep seeing people saying they are desperate for a loan to 'consolidate their debts'.

    It doesn't work.

Clearing heavy debt takes hard work, savvy spending, tough decisions and time.

It cannot be solved by 'swapping all your existing debts for one simple, monthly payment'.
