I need to install decent anti virus protection. A friend used to send me 'funny's which had been forwarded from her son.She has just had to have over 800 viruses removed from her lap top. I am now concerned that I may also have been affected.
I am not a techie, so need something that is simple to operate and does not cost the earth to install.
I have microsoft security essentials installed is this sufficient? I am running a full scan just now.

It should be enough, but if you want to double check, once the scan has finished, download Spybot Search and Destroy or Spyware Terminator ad run a full scan with one of those.0

after installing previous post recommends the easiest thing is not to bother opening them and telling the friend not to bother sending them. saves loads of hassle.0

personally i would download one of the free antivirus scanner from kaspersky or dr.web.
dr.web's is called CURE IT and is freeware, download and run the exe file, then run a scan,
kaspersky is called Kaspersky Removal Tool, also freeware. as above.

download either or both, doesnt matter neither will be installed both are extracted and run, check computer for infections, remove infections if found and then uninstall,
for a permantely installed antiviurs I suggest AntiVir, Avast Home,
personally though i use Eset Smart Security, i did use kaspersky for 5 years but there new 2010 isnt as good as there 2009 version.
spybot and spyware terminator only remove spyware, and malwarebytes antispyware is better than both of those, also freeware.

if malwarebytes does find something, post the log file here, and i'm sure alienrik or one of the other will help remove anything that the programs i've mentioned didnt fix.0 -
Download MALWAREBYTES (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/
Open malwarebytes and goto UPDATE and click 'check for updates'. After its updated goto SCANNER and click PERFORM FULL SCAN then click SCAN
Post the COMPLETE log here AFTER youve deleted everything it finds
reboot
Download HIJACK THIS (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/
Click MAIN MENU then DO A SYSTEM SCAN AND SAVE A LOGFILE(Takes seconds) then post the log so we can see whats running
(do NOT do anything else with Hijack but scan and post the FULL log):idea:0
